How did you come up with the idea? |
|
At my core I have always had a deep sense that I needed to be more than just a participant in the fight to find a cure for CF. I'm a creative person and I wanted to come up with an idea that was unique and would hopefully capture people's imagination and attention. I've also wanted to take on a project "with a purpose", one larger than profit. I have always wrestled with the idea of chairing an event - a 5K run, a silent auction, etc. - and in early 2006, around the time themilliondollarhomepage.com accomplished its goal of raising $1 million, it hit me. If a 21 year-old aspiring college student could raise $1 million dollars by selling pixels as advertising space, then an aspiring generation could do it too (minus the commercialism)! And while this may not be an original idea, I hope that Mr. Tew will be honored to know that his original idea of selling pixels for profit has spawned this idea to sell pixels (in the form of a rose) for charity. That's it. |

Is this a joke or just another PR stunt? |
|
This is not a PR stunt nor is this about me - this is about CF and doing whatever it takes to helping find a cure. Although it may seem hokey to think I can raise $1 million dollars, it is not a joke! I have partnered with the Central Ohio Chapter of the Cystic Fiborsis Foundation to ensure that every penny goes directly to the CF Foundation. Every donation will receive a rose (50x37-pixels) and hopefully together we can make CF history, because I want to look back some day and know that I did whatever I could to help find a cure for CF. As for any "PR stunt", I do not wish for any personal recognition, and if this website gains extra attention to the cause for finding a cure for CF, then all the better. But again, this is not about me - this is about CF and doing whatever it takes to helping finding a cure. |

My name is Chad Eddy, and I live in Columbus, Ohio. I am the uncle of two beautiful girls who were born with CF. Since getting involved with various CF events over the past 10 years, I have always been looking to do something BIG for the cause of finding a cure for CF. |

The idea is simple: Raise $1 million dollars (or more) for Cystic Fibrosis research to find a cure for CF - hence, 'Make CF History'. Think of it as "The Million Dollar Home Page" meets "The Home Page with a Purpose". My main motivation stems from, if nothing else, a sense of urgency! I have 2 nieces with CF and time is of the essence. I know there are many people who have loved ones living with CF who feel the same way! So, everyone is welcome to make a donation and receive a rose. In recognition of your donation, you will receive one rose measuring 50x50-pixels. When you make your donation, you can include in the "special instructions" of the donation form a commemorative message to display on 'mouse-over' with your rose (absolutely no obscene or offensive messages are allowed). You can also have your rose be a hyperlink to click-through to your own website by including your URL in the "special instructions" of the donation form, but it must be related to the cause of finding a cure for CF. You will see there is no limit to the amount of roses that can be placed on the site and because this campaign is donation-based, there is no set price - donations of every amount will get a rose! However, roses are placed on the homepage in order of donation amounts, sorted highest-to-lowest. Therefore, the placement of your rose is determined by your donation amount. The higher the donation, the higher the placement your rose will have on the home page. The rose with the highest donation will be placed in the upper left-hand corner, and conversely, the rose with the lowest donation amount will be placed in the lower right-hand corner.
As the number of donations grows, so will the number of roses on the home page. The reason for selling them in 50x50 pixel blocks is because anything smaller would be too small to display and anything bigger, well, would be too big. The rose you buy will be displayed on the homepage permanently. Using my own money, I guarantee to keep it online through 2017, and my intention is to have it online forever. I want it to become an internet time capsule. So, in the long run, these roses will be of timeless value and you will have your piece of internet history forever! |
